On 1/6/18 at approximately 1530hrs, the Riverside Police
were dispatched for the report of a disorderly male subject at the First
Moravian Church located on Bridgeboro St.
The caller stated that the male was reportedly throwing bibles and
spraying a fire extinguisher inside the church. The church was not open to the public at the
time. Upon arrival, the police located
the male suspect being detained by a
parishioner. The suspect was wearing only his underwear. After a brief struggle, the
male was placed under arrest by police and identified as Mark A. Araujo, 19
years, of Beverly, NJ.
The police found that Araujo had illegally entered the church, took off all of his
clothing and allegedly caused extensive damage to several items within. The damage included broken stained glass windows,
musical instruments, Christmas decorations, religious reading materials,
religious artifacts and the discharge of a fire extinguisher. Police also located marijuana dumped upon the
top of the church lectern.
Araujo was charged with Burglary, Desecration of
Venerated Objects, Criminal Mischief, Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest and
Possession of Marijuana.
