Driver Charged with 'Assault by Auto'

Motor Vehicle Crash Sends Vehicle Through Fence into Front Yard

On February 8, 2022 at approximately 10:09 am, the Riverside Police were dispatched to the intersection of Washington Street and Fairview Street for a two-car motor vehicle accident with airbag deployment and injury.  Upon arrival, officers found a Hyundai Sonata with front-end damage disabled in the middle of the intersection.  The other vehicle, a Honda HRV, was located in the front yard of 102 West Washington Street just beyond the shattered vinyl fence it crashed through.  Travel was shut down on both roadways for several minutes while the Riverside Fire Department and EMS services responded.

Through the police investigation, it was determined that the driver of the Hyundai made a left turn directly into the path of the oncoming Honda causing the accident.  The collision sent the Honda off the roadway, through a fence and nearly into a house.  The driver of the Honda sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital to be evaluated where he was treated and released.

The driver of the Hyundai was identified as Odenilsa De Sousa Veloso, 40 yrs, of Willingboro, NJ.  In addition to not yielding the right of way to the Honda, officers discovered that Veloso was not licensed to operate a motor vehicle.

Veloso was taken into custody and transported to the Riverside Township Police Department where she was processed and charged with Assault by Auto, Driving while Unlicensed, Reckless Driving and Failure to Yield the Right of Way.  She was released pending court.
