Intoxicated, Unlicensed Driver Charged in Motor Vehicle Crash

On the evening of Saturday, October 10, 2021, the Riverside Police were called out to a motor vehicle accident on North Fairview Street involving a Chevy Equinox and a Dodge Ram truck.  While officers were responding, the caller reported that the driver of the Equinox was attempting to drive away.  Upon arrival, the officers found both vehicles at the scene.

Riverside officers determined that the driver of the Chevy Equinox drove through a stop sign and struck the Dodge Ram truck, injuring the driver of the truck and the juvenile passenger.  The juvenile was unable to exit the truck due to the damage caused in the accident.  The Riverside Fire Department responded to extricate the injured juvenile.  Both the driver and the passenger were transported to the hospital for treatment.

Through their investigation, officers determined that the driver of the Equinox, identified as Clayver L. Chaves, 25 yrs of Riverton, was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and was not licensed to drive. Witnesses at the scene informed officers that they saw Chaves and his passenger throw beer bottles from their vehicle prior to police arrival.  Several bottles of beer were located outside of the vehicle at the crash scene.

Chaves was placed under arrest and transported to the Riverside Police Department where he was charged with Driving while Intoxicated, Reckless Driving, Unlicensed Driving, Failure to Stop, and Open Container of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle. He was released pending additional evidence.

During the week of February 1, 2022, additional evidence was gathered and Chaves was charged criminally with 2 counts of Assault by Auto (4th degree).  He was served and the case is pending court.
