Riverside Officers Honored by MADD for Outstanding Drunk Driving Enforcement

Riverside Township Police
Riverside, NJ

New Brunswick, NJ - Yesterday morning, members of the Riverside Township Police attended a ceremony held by the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) organization to honor New Jersey officers who have demonstrated successful interdiction in drunk driving enforcement.  Mr. Robert Nulman, Regional MADD Board Member and master of ceremonies, told the story behind his motivation to work with MADD.  It was October of 1987, when the police came to his door to tell him there had been a car accident, and they gave him the absolute worse news any parent could ever receive.  His 22 year old son, a college student at TCNJ was dead, killed by a drunk driver operating a vehicle the wrong way on I-95.  It is situations like this that have been the foundation of the MADD Organization, which honors officers throughout the country annually for their diligent pursuit in arresting drunk driving offenders.  These life-altering situations also provide the motivation for the Riverside Township Police to keep drunk driving offenders off our streets.

We are proud to announce that two of our officers received recognition at this ceremony with Ptl. Gabriel Gardner receiving the award for the 2023 “Top Cop” of Burlington County.  Ptl. Gardner had 29 arrests for Driving while Intoxicated, the most of any officer in Burlington County.  Ptl. Nicholas Strough received a “Special Recognition” award with 21 arrests for Driving while Intoxicated.  The Riverside Township Police are dedicated to proactive drunk driving enforcement through special enforcement details, grant applications and officer training.  In 2023, our officers conducted over 3,000 car stops with 101 of those drivers being arrested for Driving while Intoxicated.  Our officers are working to make sure stories like Mr. Nulman’s do not happen in Riverside Township.

Congratulations to Ptl. Gardner, Ptl. Strough and all of our officers who have made drunk driving enforcement a priority to keep our residents and their families safe!
