Sexual Assault Suspect Arrested in North Carolina

Riverside Township Police

Riverside, NJ-  This past week, the Riverside Township Police Department began investigating the sexual assault of a juvenile that occurred within the Township of Riverside.

During the investigation, detectives determined that an additional sexual assault involving the same suspect had occurred in Willingboro Township. As a result of the joint investigative efforts, the suspect was identified as a twenty-nine-year-old former Riverside Township resident, Gilmar Da Silva Carvalho.

In coordination with the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, a warrant was issued for the suspect’s arrest. At the time the warrant was issued, the suspect’s immediate whereabouts were unknown, and information obtained during the investigation indicated the suspect had left the State of New Jersey.

The Riverside Township Police Department, in coordination with the New Jersey State Police and the United States Marshals Service, worked collaboratively to locate the suspect. Through these efforts, the suspect was located in North Carolina. The Watauga County Sheriff’s Department was contacted and subsequently took the suspect into custody late Friday night. The suspect is currently being held in North Carolina pending extradition back to the State of New Jersey.

Gilmar Da Silva Carvalho was charged with multiple counts of Aggravated Sexual Assault, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and Criminal Sexual Contact. This investigation remains ongoing. No further details will be released at this time to protect the integrity of the case and the privacy of the victim.

The Riverside Township Police Department would like to commend the outstanding work of our Detective Bureau for their thorough and relentless efforts, not only in successfully investigating this case but also in locating the suspect. We also thank the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office of North Carolina, the United States Marshals Service, the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, the New Jersey State Police, and the Willingboro Township Police Department for their assistance in this investigation.
