Reckless E-Motorcycle Operator Arrested
Riverside, NJ
Yesterday afternoon, in the area of Delaware Ave and Washington St, Riverside Township Police officers observed a male wearing a mask, recklessly operating an unregistered, off-road electric motorcycle at a high rate of speed through a construction zone. The operator ignored commands to stop by uniformed police officers conducting traffic control at that location. The suspect was familiar to officers due to numerous previous sightings in town and reports that he was operating the bike recklessly, speeding, and performing stunts on public roads. As a result of the investigation conducted by the officers on scene, a suspect was developed, leading officers to a residence in Cinnaminson, NJ.
It was at that location that officers located and arrested
Michael McCauley, 21 years old, outside his home, and impounded his electric
motorcycle. The bike model was identified as a Surron Ultra Bee electric
motorcycle capable of speeds up to 56 mph, which is not legal to ride on public roadways in New Jersey. The capabilities of this motorcycle exceed US
e-bike limits, and it is considered a motorcycle strictly for off-road use.
The suspect was charged with Obstructing the Administration
of Law and Resisting Arrest, Operating an Unregistered Vehicle, Reckless
Driving, Speeding, Disregarding a Traffic Control Device, and Driving through a
Safety Zone. These offenses come with enhanced penalties for operating
through a construction zone.
We want to thank our residents for taking the time to report
these sightings and for their continued support in our efforts to enforce the
laws on the illegal operation of these types of bikes, motorcycles and
ATVs. We also want to thank the officers with the Cinnaminson Police who
assisted us on scene with the investigation, and members of the Riverton
Borough Police Department who provided information that helped us identify the
suspect.
In 2022, Riverside Township enacted an ordinance prohibiting
the operations of ATVs and Dirt Bikes on township roadways identifying them as
an immediate threat to public safety and allowing for their seizure and forfeiture. In 2025, a local ordinance restricting the
operation of e-bikes was enacted to provide restrictions on their operation on
township sidewalks, parks and roadways.
Also, in January of 2026, the State of NJ passed a comprehensive law regulating
the use of E-bikes on all roadways and parks.
The framework and enforcement of that State law is still in process, but
due to take effect in July of 2026.
