Fraud Theft of $25K Leads to Two Arrests
This past week, the Riverside Township Police were contacted by a resident who reported that she was scammed out of approximately $25,000 in cash. The victim told the officers that a pop up window reporting a virus appeared on her computer along with a phone number to call. When she called that number, a male identified himself as member of the Wells Fargo bank security team and implied that she was the cause of a virus on their network. He told her that in order to avoid prosecution from the FBI, she would need to withdraw $25,000 in cash, bring it home and place in a box to be picked up by their agents. A male arrived at the house and picked up the $25K in cash from her. Shortly thereafter that male called her again and informed her that he would also need her to withdraw $30,000 and prepare it for pickup in the same manner. The victim then called the Riverside Police.
Riverside Township Police Detectives worked with the victim to communicate with the suspect just as she did in the first incident. After the victim followed the instructions, two male suspects arrived at her house to pick up the cash. This time, Riverside Township Police Detectives were waiting for them. Both males were confronted by the detectives. The suspects were identified as MD N. Islam, 48 years, of Egg Harbor Twp, NJ and Mohammad Z. Islam, 58 years, of Westville, NJ.
As a result of the ensuing investigation, both suspects were charged with 2C:20-4 Theft by Deception (3rd degree). Both suspects were released on summonses pending court appearances.
